Steph Curry Recognized for Advocacy by the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Foundation

Steph Curry, the standout player for the Golden State Warriors, was announced as the recipient of the 2022-23 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award this week, beating out tough competition from four other finalists. These finalists included Jaren Jackson Jr. from the Memphis Grizzlies, Tre Jones from the San Antonio Spurs, Grant Williams from the Boston Celtics, and Chris Paul from the Phoenix Suns.

As part of winning the award, the NBA will be donating $100,000 to the University of San Francisco’s Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice in Curry’s honor. Additionally, each of the other finalists will receive $25,000 donations to programs of their choosing.

The award, named after the legendary NBA player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, recognizes Curry’s commitment to advocating for social justice and carrying forward Abdul-Jabbar’s mission of promoting equality for individuals and groups who have faced historical marginalization or systemic disadvantages.

Throughout his career, Curry has been known for his charitable efforts. The NBA highlighted his collaborations with various organizations to boost voter participation and civic involvement, as well as his initiatives to provide sports opportunities for marginalized groups. Additionally, Curry co-founded Eat. Learn. Play., a nonprofit with his wife Ayesha, which focuses on tackling food insecurity among children in Oakland. The organization has distributed millions of meals and hundreds of thousands of books to students in the city. Furthermore, they have supported over 1,500 teacher-led projects and contributed to the renovation of multiple school facilities in Oakland.
